The Origins of Country Music. A History Of Country Music

Musicians played fiddle music in Appalachian for many years, but it was not until 1927 in Bristol, Tennessee, that the first  country music recording contract was signed. That year, Victor Records signed Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family.

Jimmie Rodgers was born in Meridian Mississippi, in 1897. He initially worked on the railroad until his health worsened, and it was only during this time that he pursued his earlier interest in entertainment. In 1927, he heard that Victor Records was setting up a portable recording studio and went there. He was immediately signed and continued to record and perform music until his death in 1933.?

In 1965, he was one of the first musicians to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1961, along with Hank Williams and Fred Rose. The same day Jimmie Rodgers signed with Victor Records, so did the Carter family, which would become one of the most popular country bands of all time. They remained with Victor Records until 1936. Even a divorce did not separate the band, and they continued to record with Decca until 1939. Things started to take a turn for the worse at this point, and despite signing to Universal and eventually Victor Records again, the band disbanded in 1941.?

It is widely recognized that this big day in 1927 was the day that introduced country music to the rest of the country. Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family received critical acclaim and became hugely popular, selling numerous records. Country singers and bands today often cite the Carter family or Jimmie Rodgers as their primary influences, and with very good reason.
