People believe that betting on horses is based on luck, and the only way to make money on horses is to get inside information. In insider information, people generally refer to match fixes or other insights that one or more horses are ill. This may have been true once, but in today's modern world where gambling is institutionalized and routinely controlled, this rarely happens.
And what? Should you play with a mysterious hunch and just expect the best? There are better options. Make bets and make calculated guesses based on the information gathered about the various horses. Here are eight golden rules to keep in mind when determining how well a particular horse will perform in the race you are betting on.
1. Look at the weather to see how the horse has progressed accordingly in the race. Some horses run better in the rain than others, while others rush to the finish line on cloudy days. Why? I don't know, but the important thing is that it was true and it worked for me.
2. Don't expect older horses to run slower than 3-year-old horses at the end of the season. It's not just true. All you really need to know is how many races each horse ran. Sometimes horses compete in too many races, which slows them down, but it has nothing to do with age.
3. Surprisingly, you may think that there is a direct relationship between the weight of the jockey and the speed of the horse, but there is not. Most jockeys weigh about the same, so relatively heavy jockeys actually win.
4. Similarly, heavy horses can run faster than light horses, but to some extent. Stallions are about 100 pounds heavier than mares, making them more likely to win endurance races.
5. Just because a horse has a new blindfold does not mean that it will run faster. This may sound strange, but a friend I met at the racetrack gave me this advice, and I had to disprove it to save the heartache of those who fall for it.
6. Check the horse's pedigree. Don't forget to save the information you find. You can also buy books about specific horses at your local bookstore. After collecting all the relevant information, keep in mind that foals do not need as much pedigree as mares to run very fast.
7. Don't rely too much on pedigree in lower class races. This is where weak horses tend to shine.
8. Female jockeys are starting to make their names, so don't underestimate them during the race. They have been brilliantly winning lately.
