10 Steps To Clear Thinking

Does your mind sometimes feel like a TV channel that just can't tune in properly? I know there are interesting programs out there, but they're all mixed with noise. What if you could "tune in" at will and always have a clear idea?

Here are 10 clear-thinking techniques and tips:

1. Take a walk.

Science will eventually prove that this is a great way to improve the quality of your thinking, but don't wait for proof. Just take a walk.

2. Avoid sugar.

If you want to understand what brain fog is, eat a sweet donut on an empty stomach and solve a math problem 20 minutes later. What you experience with "Sugar Blues" is brain fog. At least cut out sugar and simple carbs when you need to think clearly.

3. An organized space means clear thinking.

Confused people rarely actually perform well. An uncluttered workspace means you won't be distracted by "where is that..." thoughts.

4. Sleep well.

Sleep requirements vary, but most people have a 5 hour minimum. Some people struggle with if their sleep less than eight hours. However, research shows that above a certain minimum amount, sleep quality becomes more important for normal brain function.

5. Attempt to meditate.

No time? For a while, close your eyes, relax, and observe your breathing. Accept that your mind is wandering, but bring your attention back to your breath. Do it for 5 minutes and you will feel your brain power up.

6. Release your "frustration of the heart".

Be careful with your busy brain. Perhaps the phone calls you had to make unknowingly bothered you. Find those stressors and do something to release them. For example, when you make this call or put it on your list,  your mind lets go of the moment. Simply looking at the problem and saying, "I can't do anything until Friday" often subconsciously takes away the worry.

7. Don't drink alcohol.

At least don't drink too much. Moderate amounts can boost creative thinking, but all evidence points to it being bad for long-term brain health.

8. Make decisions quickly.

Nothing hinders clear thinking more than the many decisions that have yet to be made. If nothing else, decide when to make a decision.

9. Go get some fresh air.

Go outside and take a deep breath through your nose. The brain is supplied with an adequate amount of oxygen, and a change of environment helps clear the head.

10. Meet physical needs.

Clear thinking is easier when you're not hungry, thirsty, or too hot.

Starting today, you can think more clearly. There are certainly more than a dozen ways to do it, but all it really takes to have a more efficient brain is to make a few of them a habit. Why not try one or two at a time?
